![]() In the Individual Quad-line competition, Guido Maiocchi (Italy) came out ahead of James Robertshaw (Great Britain) and Mark Lummas (Great Britain). There were also some really surprising results. This column will not become an AKA mouthpiece, but it will continue to feature my thoughts and observations. There will be some difficulties, I'm sure, but I am excited. ![]() We are almost done putting the crew together a group of talented, excited folks who want to help move the sport forward.īetween my position as editor/publisher of KiteLife, and my AKA position, I know that I will be wearing several hats, that may not always be compatible. Adam has asked me to take a leadership position within the Association. The goal of this reorganization is to get some long-delayed projects moved through the system in a short period of time. (This is where the irony comes in: in my last column, I publicly endorsed Gomberg as a write-in candidate for the Pres job!). These committees are the ones who make things happen for the membership. The AKA has not always been seen as an action-oriented, dynamic organization.Īdam Grow, the newly-elected AKA president, has initiated a reorganization of the Standing Committees. Those who know me know that I have been outspoken about my concerns with organized kiting. This column is not about me, but there is a personal note that I wanted to briefly speak about. Most of the rest of you have some work to do. Some promoters are already well on the way to making their festivals great, Roger Chewning (Wildwood, Ocean City, etc) and Tom McAllister (Berkeley) come to mind. These are only a few ideas toward making a kite festival more fun for the public. They walked over to the sales tent, and bought two kites, which they have flown ever since. The Mass Ascension went off right at noon, then *BAM*, Masters Ballet. Several years ago, my parents came to Grand Haven for the Great Lakes event. Stage a Mass Ascension each day of the festival, at a set time. Besides sportkites, you could do the LTF experience with fighter kites, rokkakus and then have a Novice comp for the new fliers.Įliminate dead air! Have you ever been listening to the radio, and the station suddenly goes silent? How many seconds does it take before you change stations? Keep kites in the air, keep a knowledgeable commentator on the microphone, keep pleasant music playing. Any festival that doesn't offer a well-staffed "learn to fly" experience is missing the boat. Folks want to be involved, not to sit back and watch. Static entertainment is becoming a thing of the past. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Don't stop at press releases! A savvy event promoter could take the time to make a videotape with short segments of the high points of a fest kids flying kites, a Masters team, mass ascensions. Work harder at publicity! The time and effort spent on getting word of your festival out to the public is time well spent. While it may take a long time to evolve most kite festivals to the point that they are a great way for the whole family to spend an entire day, there are some things that festival promoters can do immediately to better attract, and then entertain the general public. I was surprised at the number of sportkite competitors who reacted favorably to the idea of slimming the number of disciplines, leaving more time for fun, and activities geared toward involving the public. We got great response to last issue's column, where I called for staging kite festivals that are more appealing to the public. I thank you for your efforts on our behalf. The people who made this happen are too numerous to mention, but you know who you are. A year's preparation resulted in another great event, ah yes. What makes a great event like the AKA Nationals possible? Hundreds of hours of work by true professionals - work done behind the scenes with very little recognition, with the main reward being the tired, yet satisfied feeling that they all had on Sunday night. It was a week where there were truly not enough hours in a day to experience all that our sport has to offer, though I damned near killed myself trying to cram those hours as fully as possible! ![]() The recent AKA event convinced me further of the truth of one of my core beliefs - that I am indeed fortunate to participate in a hobby with such a talented and diverse group of participants. I mean, it’s not clear because we move right along without really being given time to ingest what happened, but it seems to me that Tim and Steph were just going to let him go….even though he is still a criminal. Seems way too quick and easy of a cleanup for me. Not only that, but Anarky broadcasts what First Victim was up to, so I guess that’s the stories way of saying that all those people shouldn’t be mad at Batman anymore. How rushed was this story to fit everything in? So rushed that the main villain gets defeated off panel! Wow. I mean, we don’t get a conclusion for his mini arc, so why was it even broached? Yeah, he is there, but he is drifting in and out of consciousness so he doesn’t really contribute in any real way, nor does focusing on his loss really matter at this given point in time. And beyond that, Tim doesn’t even feature in the rest of the story after that point. But still, what did that have to do with the story at hand? Yes, it was relevant because it just got destroyed, but it was hardly important to the A plot. Tynion does start the story off with a three page flashback in order to remind us of how enthusiastic Tim was about The Belfry, so at least with him we do get to spend some extra time in order to help us feel sorry for him over seeing all his hard work dashed to smithereens. Not saying that they all should have had their own issues or something like that, but there was definitely more worth exploring in each of those plot points than this story permitted. It’s a lot to take in, and any one of those moments could and should have been given a lot more room to breath. We are expected to empathize with Tim losing the Belfry, accept that Anarky and Spoiler have come to terms with who they want to be as people/heroes, and witness the culmination of the Cassandra/Basil friendship that has been a C plot since almost the very beginning of Rebirth. Like I said, the focus on action didn’t leave much extra room, but that doesn’t mean the story didn’t try to throw in everything and the kitchen sink. ![]() Personally, I think that the story demanded too much from us without giving us enough to work with. But maybe that’s because I wasn’t given the time or space to get involved. I just followed along with what was happening till I got to the end. All I know is that my experience was one in which I never really felt all that involved in the narrative. Now maybe that’s my own fault, or maybe it’s the fault of the story. I’m not sure why, but I just had a real disconnect from what was going on. The thing that’s odd about the action is that even though it is fast paced, it doesn’t really feel all that epic….and I think that is what the team was trying to deliver. But with so much action, there really wasn’t a lot of room left over for much else. ![]() The majority of the story is spent herding Clayface away from potential victims and towards Monster Town so the team can use Victoria October’s serum on Clayface. This was a super fast read! When I got to the end, I actually went back through and counted the pages to make sure there were 20, because it definitely didn’t feel like it to me. Will the Gotham Knights be able to stop Clayface in time, or is the damage already done? First Victim’s dastardly plan unfolds as a gigantic rage induced Clayface goes on a rampage through Gotham City that will undoubtedly turn many more citizens against the Dark Knight over his willingness to utilize a super villain on his new task force. ![]() The program name and icon have some extra text in the 64-bit version for better distinguishingĭownload IrfanView-64 English (Version 4.66, Self extracting EXE file, 4.16 MB).For example: install the 32-bit version in your "Program Files (x86)" folder and the 64-bit version in your "Program Files" folder (install 32-bit PlugIns to IrfanView-32 and 64-bit PlugIns to IrfanView-64, DO NOT mix the PlugIns and IrfanView bit versions) You can install both versions on the same system, just use different folders.Command line options for scanning (/scan etc.) work only in 32-bit ( 64-bit TWAIN drivers are rare => in case of problems, use IrfanView-32 for scanning). Some old 32-bit PlugIns work only in compatilibilty mode in IrfanView-64.All PlugIns will work: not all PlugIns are ported (yet) to 64-bit (like OCR) and some 32-bit PlugIns must be still used in the 64-bit version, some with limitations (see the "Plugins32" folder).Loads all files/images for normal needs (max.Runs 'only' on a 64-bit Windows (Vista, Win7, Win8, Win10, Win11)Īdvantages of IrfanView 32-bit over 64-bit version:. ![]() Faster for very large images (25+ Megapixels, loading or image operations). It can load VERY large files/images (image RAM size over 1.3 GB, for special users).Starting with IrfanView 4.40 there is also a 64-bit version available.Īdvantages of IrfanView 64-bit over 32-bit version: This can be a great way to enjoy media in different languages or to improve accessibility for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The ASRS are a norm-referenced tool based on the diagnostic criteria of ASDs in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.), Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR American Psychiatric Association, 2000). The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale was developed by James E. The children in the study received a comprehensive evaluation at the average age of 21.9 months, and began therapy at an average of 22.1 months. Several screening measures have been developed for early identification, including the Autism Spectrum Rating Scales, 618 years Parent Report (ASRS). Once again, those conversations are handled in a natural and sensitive way, with Seraph scolding the prince when he brings up their deadname (i.e. Depending on the player’s choices, Amir can talk with Seraph about their identity and what being both non-binary and pansexual means to Seraph. While not every character really understands their identity, through the game the matter is always handled with respect. Seraph is a non-binary character who uses they/them pronouns. One deserving special recognition is Seraph, the non-binary spymaster and advisor of prince Amir. ![]() The prince is not the only LGBTQ+ character in the game, as there are a number of other such characters in the cast. The final judgement of Amir depends on his choice of vegetable. Instead, it has a tongue-in-cheek narrative through and through using parody as a way to expose the absurdities of homophobia, such as when the prince is brough to judgement accused of being “really, really gay” and the judgement itself involves the prince having to quickly choose between objects related to stereotypical ideas of sexuality. Prince Amir and two of his advisors, Seraph and Magda.ĭespite touching on those heavy subjects, however, the game is not a heavy drama in any way. The close circle of advisors, who know about Amir and help him navigate through the game, is also something relatable to the “queer experience”. While most LGBTQ+ people have not had to rule a kingdom for a couple of months, many have had to hide their identities from the world. These choices in plot and mechanics bring experiences relatable to many queer players into the game. ![]() At the start of the game homosexuality is illegal in Amir’s kingdom, and throughout the game the player must balance a “suspicion meter” in order to avoid being discovered by the people beyond his close circle of advisors (who are very much supportive of him). Instead of going for the more utopic option of having the game set in a place where there is no prejudice, the game chooses to go for a more “realistic”, yet still humorous, approach to LGBTQ+ issues. ![]() Besides being the only game found in the previous analysis to have characters explictily described as gay, YRG also puts the protagonist’s sexuality as an important part of both the game’s plot and mechanics. Your Royal Gayness is a game that puts the player in control of Amir, a gay prince, who is left in control of a not-too-LGBTQ+-friendly nation when his parents leave for two months. When looking for diversity of characters, three games were of particular note, Your Royal Gayness, for its portrayal of its gay protagonist and a non-binary support character, Raanaa, for its Sámi main character and themes, and Control, for its leading women characters and subversion of a common videogame trope. In this post, we will highlight some positive examples and good practices regarding character diversity and representation in Finnish games.
